Zepeto - Is It Safe?

Zepeto is a virtual reality app that allows users to create personalized avatars and explore various user-generated worlds, engaging in games and chats. While it offers creative opportunities, there are several safety concerns parents should be aware of:

  • Harmful Content: Users may encounter inappropriate material, including sexual content, profanity, cyberbullying, and content related to self-harm. The app's voice chat feature further exposes users to potentially harmful interactions.
  • Predation Risks: Zepeto’s numerous chat rooms and “Crew” feature, which functions similarly to Discord servers, provide avenues where predators might target children by posing as peers. The presence of private messaging options increases this risk.
  • In-App Purchases: The app operates on a freemium model with two currencies: coins and Zems. While coins are easily earned, Zems often require real money. Users are frequently prompted with pop-up ads to purchase virtual items, including branded merchandise like Nike shoes for avatars.
  • Privacy and Parental Controls: Although users can adjust settings to control interactions and block others, Zepeto lacks robust parental controls. Children can alter privacy settings without parental knowledge, making it challenging to monitor their activities effectively.

Recommendation: Due to the limited parental controls and the potential exposure to inappropriate content and interactions, it is advisable for parents to exercise caution regarding their children’s use of Zepeto.
